Chasing Snow in Korea: My Favorite Winter Destinations for a Real Snowfall Experience

There’s something special about winter in Korea. It isn’t just cold weather it’s the way mountains turn white overnight, how pine forests suddenly look like scenes from a fairy tale, and how quiet everything becomes when snow starts falling.

Every year, I try to escape the city and chase the best snowy spots around the country. After years of winter trips, here are the places that never disappoint the ones where I’ve consistently found real snowfall, magical winter scenery, and moments that made me stop and just breathe in the beauty. If you’re planning a winter trip and want that true snowy-Korea experience, keep reading. These are my go-to winter destinations and everything you need to know to enjoy them.

Seoraksan — Where Winter Feels Wild and Alive

The first time I visited Seoraksan in winter, I didn’t expect the snow to hit so hard. One moment I was walking through bare forest, and the next I was surrounded by white — thick snow on the branches, frozen waterfalls, and a silence so deep it felt unreal.

Why I Keep Going Back

  • The granite peaks look dramatic under snow
  • Biryong Falls freezes into a massive ice wall
  • Even easy trails feel magical after fresh snowfall

What I Usually Do There

I take the cable car up to Gwongeumseong Fortress for a bird’s-eye view of the snowy valleys. If the weather is kind, I hike toward Ulsanbawi, where the contrast of cliffs and snow is stunning

Getting There

From Seoul, buses to Sokcho are fast and frequent. From the terminal, a quick taxi ride takes you to the park entrance.

Pro tip: Arrive early. By afternoon the temperature drops fast and trails get icy.

Deogyusan & Muju Resort — For When You Want Snow Without the Struggle

Some mountains make you work for the view. Deogyusan gives it to you on a silver platter.

Thanks to Muju Resort’s gondola, you can float above the snowy forest and step out into a full winter panorama without breaking a sweat.

What Makes This Place Special

  • One of Korea’s heaviest-snow areas
  • Easy access via gondola (perfect if you don’t hike often)
  • Hyangjeokbong Peak is breathtaking on a clear winter day

My Go-To Routine

I ride the gondola, walk around the snowy ridge, take way too many photos, and warm up with hot coffee inside the resort. If you like skiing, it’s one of the less crowded resorts in Korea.

Pro tip: The ridge can get windy so bring a scarf or face mask.

Nami Island — Close to Seoul but Still Magical

Nami Island is one of those places that transforms completely under snow.

The tree lanes? Straight out of a K-drama.
The riverside views? Quiet and dreamy.
The cafés? Extra cozy in winter.

What I Usually Do There

I always walk through the Metasequoia Lane first — it looks unreal when covered in snow. After that, I grab hot chocolate at a riverside café and wander around the island at my own pace.

Why It’s Great

  • Easy day trip from Seoul
  • Perfect for couples or solo travelers
  • Snow scenes are beautiful even after light snowfall

Pro tip: Visit a day or two after snow is forecasted — that’s when the island looks its best.
